Query about biblical prophecies in relation to "talk reason" |
David, Andie Baruch |

How do you interpret the numerous referances in the Torah for "prophecies" such as the jewish return to Israel. This is often used as prime evidence for Gods providence in outreach and does appear very "reasonable". The whole
chain of events that took place leading to state modern israel does deam to be amazing ?
How doe you "miminalize" this ?
Andie

Query about biblical prophecies in relation to 'talk reason' |

I already sent you an e-mail but have added to it some quoted
Greetings,
how do you respond to biblical prophecies such as quoted below for the jewish return to Israel from being scattered across the worls. I only pasted a few prophecies as a saample but this is an extensive area covered by outreach organizations.
It seems that some of these prophecies are watertight and the events leadig to the creation of modern israel for example are amazing (Eg six day war victory for israel)
How do you deal with these ?
Minimilistically ?
Quotes
Amos 9:14-15
I will bring back my exiled people Israel; they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine;
they will make gardens and eat their fruit. I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them," says the Lord your God.
Ezekiel 37:21-22
and say to them, `This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them back into their own land.
Ezekiel 34:13
I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land. I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land.
Deuteronomy 30:3-5
then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he scattered you. Even if you have been banished to the most distant land under the heavens, from
there the Lord your God will gather you and bring you back. He will bring you to the land that belonged to your fathers, and you will take possession of it. He will make you more prosperous and numerous than your fathers.
Deuteronomy 28:64
Then the Lord will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other

Dear Mr. David:
It has come to our attention that, besides sending your letter to Talk Reason, you also sent a practically identical letter to another website, where a detailed reply to your questions has already appeared (see http://www.daatemet.org/questions/index.cfm?MESSAGEID=2599). Please construe the Daat Emet's reply to your letter as reflecting our position as well.
You are entitled to your own interpretation of the quoted passages from the Torah. However, the question about the "prophecies" you quoted has been discussed many times before and the validity of the thesis asserting that these prophecies were actually fulfilled has been shown to be highly debatable. In particular, on Talk Reason there are a few posts addressing this question. For example, you may look up the post at http://www.talkreason.org/articles/gottlieb.cfm, (especially the section Predictions in the Torah), or http://www.talkreason.org/articles/Rubin_Gottl.cfm, as well as some other posts where this question is briefly discussed. The conclusion of the authors of these posts (as well as of various other writers who dealt with this question in detail) is that the statements asserting the fulfilment of prophecies are hardly tenable.
