This is a question. When creationists are asked, "If everything was a product of "special creation, way are there so many similarities between species?" Their reply is that there is one designer using the same blueprints for design" How would you answer this?
Thanks
Darlene Snyder
P.S. I read something about this in The Biology Teacher, but cannot seem to find it anywhere! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Darlene:
Here is a very brief answer to your question. If we accept the argument that the similarities you point to resulted from a single designer, then we must likewise discuss the problem of suboptimal design. An average engineer would certainly design, say, the human body without multiple faults such as the unnecessary appendix, which is a cause of many painful problems, and the wisdom teeth, which are unnecessary but cause problems as well. There are a large number of examples of stupid design which does not fit the image of a super powerful designer. On the other hand, how can we explained the extremely sophisticated "design" of, say, a cancer tumor, which so effectively overcomes the organism's defenses? (See, for example the essay by Carl Zimmer on this site.) All these facts are easily explained by evolution theory but are very problematic from the standpoint of ID. You may also look up Perakh's essay on this site.
