evolution misconceptions reading Mykyta Oct 06, 2005
I've just finished reading gread book by Phil Plait "Bad Astronomy". Book covers misconceptions, misunderstanding, bad science and plain stupidity related to astronomy and gives pretty popular correct explanation on natural astronomical phenomena.
I'm looking for similar reading covering topics related to creation of the earth, evolution and related topics. Books that will give rather popular but scientifically correct explanations and rebuttal of arguments by IDers, Creationnists, ExtraTerestrialists, etc.
Can you recommend printed book covering these topics?

Thanks a lot.

Dear Mykyta:

There are many books which may satisfy your quest for simple answers to your questions. To begin with, we can recommend several such books. Popular explanations of evolution theory you may, for example, find in Richard Dawkins's books The Blind Watchmaker,
The Selfish Gene, Climbing Mount Improbable, The Ancestor's Tale and others; in H Allen Orr and J. Coyne's Speciation, in D. Futuyama's Evolution, and many others (just try a Google search on the words "evolution theory"). Among the books debunking the false arguments of the modern incarnation of creationism - the so called intelligent design theory, we can recommend recently published books such as Barbara C. Forrest and Paul R. Gross's
Creationism's Trojan Horse; Mark Perakh's Unintelligent Design; Niall
Shanks's God, the Devil and Darwin; Matt Young and Taner Edis's (editors) Why Intelligent Design Fails; Robert Pennock's Tower of Babel. Among the books debunking the older forms of creationism you may be interested in those by by D. Futuyama (Science on Trial); by P. Kitcher (Abusing Science); by T. Berra (Evolution and the Myth of Creationism). Hopefully the above
list will provide enough good reading for you for the time being.

Best wishes,

Talk Reason
